Music Notes

Last Thursday night hardcore Christ-centered bands gathered at Church Central to rock out and share Christ. Anchor Promotions, a ministry through Church Central, has created a new concert venue. Each month they plan to have different bands come play in this old building off South Wilkinson Street.

“Bands have talents for a reason. We’re all created with gifts and talents and stuff and we’re supposed to use that to glorify God and so we wanted to give not just bands an opportunity to share those gifts, but people to see them and to just be touched by that,” said Danielle Cheek, Anchor Promotions coordinator.

Their first show featured Last Year Portrait, Thief on the Right and Right Hand Drive. Cheek said Anchor Promotions tried to book well-known bands with a large fan base. Although the bands are not technically Christian labeled with only Christian lyrics, the guys in the bands say they are Christians. Their songs reflect a Christ centered lifestyle, but are written towards a more secular sound.

Steven Cheek, junior management major and bass player for Last Year Portrait, said their music encourages people to look into Christianity.

“We feel like God has called us to use our music to try and reach people that maybe don’t know about Christ and instead of playing praise and worship, we feel like we can reach a more secular crowd if we style our music after a more secular style,” Steven explained.

Danielle said she wants this venue to be available to everyone regardless of their faith. Although it is held at Church Central, it is not a church atmosphere inside.

“It’s not like we’re going to have an alter call or anything. I mean it’s a show,” Danielle said. “You’re supposed to go have a fun time. We don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable, but in the same way, it’s like when you’re a Christian, you have certain values and morals to stand up to. We aren’t gong to take the easy way out.”

Listeners seemed to enjoy themselves at the show. Although it was a small turnout, it was a good one considering Thursday was the first show.

“I was really hopeful about this kick-off concert. It was a great start,” junior English major Hannah Turner said. “However, I would really love to see more people come out in the future and a higher level of energy at the next concert.”

The night started calm, but got wilder later into the night. Right Hand Drive, a Griffin-based band, warmed the crowd up; then Thief on the Right had people dancing and screaming. By the time Last Year Portrait played, the energy in the room was contagious. A small mosh-pit got started and even some crowd surfing.

Erik Gotrich a sophomore psychology and creative writing major, attends Church Central and ran sound for the show Thursday night.

“I think it’s important to show God’s love simply through showing love instead of pushing the Bible down people’s throats.and I think the sole purpose of Anchor Promotions is to just show love and that’s it and it just happens to be God’s love, which is the best kind,” Gotrich said.

This new venue is an alternative for people who don’t care for the downtown atmosphere.

“Stay tuned. There will be more concerts,” Danielle said.
