Carty goes international

GC&SU’s Assistant Baseball Coach Tom Carty has been named the head coach for USA Athletics International, Inc.

“I am very proud to go overseas to Holland and compete with other teams,” Carty said. “I have been looking forward to this for a while.”

USA Athletics International, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving amateur athletics and coaches a chance to participate in International Olympic- style sporting events throughout the world. The athletes gain experience and can expand their educational and cultural knowledge of the world by doing things such as taking tours of historical sights.

The organization has been competing in international competition since 1992 and this is the twelfth annual invitational. Success of the baseball program in the past has prompted requests for teams in other sports to participate.

Chris Calciano, head baseball coach at GC&SU since September of 2004, said he is proud to have a GC&SU coach selected to coach the event.

“To have a member of our coaching staff overseas leading a group of men is an honor,” Calciano said. “This will be a great experience for Coach Carty and the young men that travel with him.”

This is Carty’s first year coaching at GC&SU; previously, he spent four seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Marshall University in West Virginia. While employed there, he helped the Thundering Herd pitching staff break many of the school’s single season records.

Carty will meet his team, USA Athletics International, for the first time the day they fly to Holland. The next day will be the only day the team gets to meet and workout as a team, and the following day will be the start of the tournament.

Carty will coach 15 to16 males under the age of 20 in Oldenzall, Holland. All of the players on the USA Athletics International team were selected by the association.

The tournament will be held in Holland Aug. 7-15. A few of the teams the USA Team will play include teams from Russia, the United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Carty said he had friends who went overseas and coached with USA Athletics International, and they had a lot of good things to say about the experience. He also said coaching with this organization is something that really interests him.

Sean Harrell, a freshman pitcher and an infielder, has interest in someday playing on the USA Athletics International team.

“I am very interested in the organization,” Harrell said. “I think it is a great way to play baseball, and also gain experience overseas. I think Coach Carty being the head coach is going to be great. He is a very knowledgeable guy and I believe he will be very good as a coach at the international level.”
