Black Film Festival kicks off

The GC&SU Black Film Festival kicked-off in honor of Black History Month with the film “Finye (The Wind)” on Feb. 10.

According to Dr. Eustace Palmer, professor of English, the film festival was held to show movies created by black people, including those from Africa and the African Diaspora: Brazil and the United States. The event was coordinated by Palmer and Dr. Beauty Bragg, assistant professor of English. Together they selected the films that would be included.

“It’s Black History Month, and we wanted to show movies made by black people,” Palmer said. “Also, this is one of the ways in which we are trying to achieve the university’s (hope) to enhance diversity and internationalization, so we tried to include movies from other places, like Africa. I think we really need to let students know that there is an active and vibrant movie-making industry going on in Africa.”

“Finye (The Wind)” is a movie set in a small village community in contemporary Africa. The story portrays a love affair between an army commandant’s daughter and the grandson of a tribal chief. It also illustrates the conflict between old and new values.

“One of the things I liked about it was how it juxtaposed the modern with the traditional,” said Marcelina Martin, a Milledgeville resident.

Sophomore early childhood major Lauren Winfield attended the showing and found the film to be interesting and a different cultural experience.

“It was pretty interesting,” Winfield said. “It was different.but in a good way.”

The other films to be shown in the Black Film Festival are “The Watermelon Woman” on Feb. 17 and “Orfeu” on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the A&S Auditorium.

“I think Black History Month is extremely important to show black culture, and the movie making industry is very important to black culture,” Palmer said. “Certainly during Black History Month, I think we ought to show the cultural achievements of African, Brazilian and African-American people so that people in general will be aware of what’s going on.”
