Students to ‘get engaged’ in learning during Academic Week

The GC&SU community will learn how to “get engaged” in learning from Feb. 13 to Feb. 18 during Academic Engagement Week.

The Office of Academic Engagement will be hosting the week-long event to raise awareness about the programs it offers. The department will highlight each program throughout the week, including Academic Outreach, American Humanics, the Leadership Certificate Program, the Georgia Education Mentorship (GEM) Program, service learning and research opportunities and the Experiential Transcript.

“I’m excited about showcasing all the programs and services offered through the Office of Academic Engagement,” said Doris Moody, director of Academic Engagement. “I’m looking forward to meeting lots of students and helping them find their ‘best match’ among our programs.”

Each day of the week will feature different events and activities. One of the first events of the week is “Meet Doris Moody,” on Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At this event, students can enter a raffle to win an iPod and other prizes-simply by visiting the Office of Academic Engagement in Beeson Hall. On Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., students, faculty and staff can enjoy pizza and giveaways while learning about Academic Engagement and listening to music and a disc jockey from Z97.7 radio.

“I hope that we are able to generate greater awareness of the existence and purpose of Academic Engagement, the location of our office, and the programs and services we offer,” said John Bowen, coordinator of leadership programs and GEM Program liaison.

A 24-hour poverty simulation sponsored by American Humanics, a program in the Office of Academic Engagement, will begin on the front campus lawn at 12 p.m. on Wednesday. Participants will have an identity and living-scenario. In 50 minutes, volunteers will guide them through providing food, shelter, education and healthcare for their families and themselves.

The Office of Academic Engagement will have its open house on Thursday, Feb. 16. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Beeson Hall will be open and visitors are welcome to come and enjoy light refreshments. The iPod raffle will take place at this event.

“The passion, creativity and excitement of the staff in the Office of Academic Engagement are reflected in the events that will be featured during Academic Engagement Week,” said Dr. Moody. “I hope everyone will stop in during our open house in Beeson Hall on Thursday from 11 – 2 and meet the people who conceptualized and delivered Academic Engagement Week.”

More than 15 events will take place throughout the week of Feb. 13. For a complete list of events, look for notices around campus or contact the Office of Academic Engagement. Signs will be posted throughout the week inviting students, faculty and staff to participate in the various activities.

The Office of Academic Engagement actively supports the mission of GC&SU through service, leadership and civic engagement. Its mission is to enrich student learning through distinctive and integrative opportunities, connecting classroom knowledge with action and experience.
