Southwestern grille debuts

“Way fresher, way better.”

That’s the slogan of Barberitos, the new southwestern grille and cantina that opened up this Wednesday at the corner of Hancock and Wilkinson streets.

Many students are looking forward to the recent addition to Milledgeville’s dining selection.

“I’m so thrilled that Barberitos has come to Milledgeville. I’ve eaten at the one in Athens and absolutely loved it,” said Ashley Demos, a sophomore economics major.

Unlike many other restaurants, Barberitos has no freezers in its kitchen and fresh produce is ordered and received every morning. The restaurant operates similar to Subway in the fashion that you place your order, go down a line, and your food is made right in front of you-just the way you like it.

Two flat screen TVs are set up in the dining area for entertainment purposes and the restaurant seats approximately 65 people. Alcohol is not sold at the restaurant yet, but beer and margaritas may be offered in the future. The restaurant also provides catering for large parties, businesses and events.

Gary Avants, owner of the new restaurant, said he is looking forward to contributions he may make to the community.

“Milledgeville has been a town that has been very good to me and I’m just really excited with the concept of people eating healthier since our food is made fresh everyday,” Avants said.

Avants also owns the Zaxby’s located off of Hwy. 441, Zaxby’s in Gray and Dublin, and three others in the Memphis Tennessee Market. He said the location of Zaxby’s off of 441 made it easy to start a Barberitos in a college town where there is great community support.

“If I can get the people in here I just feel people will keep coming back because the food is contagious,” Avants said.

Barberitos has provided many students in Milledgeville with jobs. Ninety percent of its workers are students.

“I’m excited about being so close to campus and to the students,” said Adam Hawk, Barberitos general manager and 2005 UGA graduate. “There’s not really this type of restaurant in this area and I look forward to.what may come.”

Barberitos offers food such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, salads, dips, ice-cream and cookies. Hours of operation are seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
