New registrar joins campus community
Robert Carver replaced Sarah Scott as new registrar on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
Carver worked and resided in Greensboro for more than 20 years before coming to GC&SU. He was associate registrar as well director for Technology for Enrollment where his office implemented enrollment systems.
“Most of my time was spent in the Registrar’s office,” Carver said.
In this office, Carver assisted in study abroad programs and interacted with students on a regular basis.
Laverne Renfroe, a senior secretary for the registrar’s office, has worked at the office for almost 15 years.
“I am very happy and am looking forward to getting to know the new registrar and working with him,” Renfroe said. “I enjoyed working with Scott for almost 15 years and it will be an interesting change to for the new registrar.”
Scott retired as GC&SU registrar on Oct.1, 2005 after 29 years of service at GC&SU. Scott cited her health as the primary reason for her retirement. In the months between Scott’s retirement and Carver’s hiring, Dr. Paul Jones, vice president of institutional research and enrollment management held the position of registrar.
Carver said registration, graduation and dealing with transcripts are the cornerstones of any registrar’s office.
“We’ve got a lot of facets,” Carver said
Veterans from all branches of the military go through the office to receive benefits. Athletic eligibility is determined by this office. Since GC&SU is a Division II school, all athletes must meet certain requirements administered by the National Athletic Association such as matriculating as a full-time student. Some student groups also determine certain requirements for their members.
Records, which determine if a student is meeting degree requirements and processed forms, are kept in this office.
“Some internal and external organizations may refer to these reports to determine retention rates, graduation rates and demographic eligibility,” Carver said.
Senior Secretary Stacey Milner said Carver has a new outlook on his job.
“It shouldn’t be that different than before when Scott and Jones had the job,” Milner said. “He has some fresh ideas and a new and different perspective on the job. It will be nice to see what kind of advocate for the officer he will be.
In his first semester at GCSU office, Caver said he would like to bring more automation to students in order to ensure academic integrity. This may include sending graduation information, providing more online classes, etc.
“I would like to get student groups together,” Carver said.
Carver said he would like to help put a face to the dry description the catalog presents of his office.
Carver earned his Baccalaureate degrees in Economics and Math from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He also received a Master’s of Education in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Carver is located in Parks Hall.
