GC&SU to observe AIDS Awareness Week
GC&SU will observe its 10th anniversary of AIDS Awareness Week, Feb 13-17, with a performance by poet and health educator Stacy Smallwood and other activities designed to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.
The following events and activities are scheduled:
Monday, February 13
Information Table, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., A&S fountain. Materials and information about HIV and AIDS will be offered.
Stacy Smallwood, Performance Poetry, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Magnolia Ballroom, Student Activities Center.
Smallwood, also known as Exodus, is a poet and health educator who has been writing poetry for nine years and performing for four years.
His work has been featured at open mics, slams, workshops, and cultural arts events across the United States. He has competed at the Southern Fried Regional Poetry Slam and the 2003, 2004, and 2005 National Poetry Slams as a member of the Columbia, S.C., Slam Team.
Note: In between Smallwood’s two sets, Dr. Scott Dillard, associate professor of rhetoric at GC&SU, will offer a poetry performance.
Tuesday, February 14
Silent Auction, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., A&S Fountain. GC&SU students, faculty, staff, and members of the community may bid on an assortment of items donated by various businesses. The proceeds will benefit the ANGELS Foundation, which provides nutritional support for those living with HIV/AIDS in the middle Georgia area as well as promotes HIV/AIDS education and awareness at GC&SU, as well as other area schools and for community groups.
”HIV/AIDS at GC&SU,” 7 p.m., A&S Auditorium. A premiere of a documentary will be shown by student Paul Grigsby in which students share what they know about HIV and AIDS. Also on the program are skits pertaining to the HIV/AIDS issue performed by students.
Wednesday, February 15
Information Table, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Front Campus. Materials and information about HIV and AIDS will be available.
”Risky Business,” 7 p.m., A&S Auditorium, Dr. Barbara Funke, professor of health education, will present a program that explores the risks associated with being sexually active.
Thursday, February 16
Information Table, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., A&S Fountain.
