The Voice

Okay, so let’s just face it. GC&SU is a suitcase college– always has been, always will be– unless something drastic is done to change this inevitable fact.

Yes, it’s true that talk is constantly going around concerning ways to change this. But even with more weekend programs, does it change? No.

GC&SU is a suitcase college simply because of the fact that we make it that way. We complain about how there’s nothing to do here on the weekends, yet we pack up our bags and leave. Kinda hypocritical of us, right?

The fact that both students and professors try to avoid getting Friday classes doesn’t exactly help the problem, either. It’s extremely easy for students to plan their class schedules around Fridays, which makes it simple to have a three-day weekend, which further translates into students being more likely to go home, or go visit different colleges.

We should say we’re going to implement more weekend programs and stick to it. Instead of just trying to plan weekend events, we should strive to promote the benefits of staying on the weekend.

First of all, there’s the obvious benefit: saving that much-needed gas money. Going back and forth between home and college adds up-and fast.

Secondly, if boredom is such a big issue on the weekends, then why not do volunteer work around the community? It’s a great way to build contacts, and it’s good to start building up resume activities before it’s too late, and you’re struggling to get those last few lines for your resume at the last minute.

And for those of you who live in the residence halls, staying on the weekends ensures that you have an amazing parking spot-shouldn’t that be enough reason in itself?

Everyone has the right to voice his or her opinion on campus, and if you have ideas of how to make this less of a suitcase college, speak up!

We’re not a commuter college, so let’s not give off that false image.
