‘Sports Talk’ makes its way back on the air

Thanks to two GC&SU students, sports fanatics now have somewhere to call home on Wednesday evenings.

“Sports Talk” made a return to WGUR this week for it’s second semester on the air. The co-hosts of “Sports Talk,” Brandon Williams and Jerome Curry, will air their show at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Due to a scheduling conflict, Curry was not able to attend the show’s semester debut. Brandon’s cousin, GC&SU graduate John Williams, appeared as a special guest to fill Curry’s shoes.

Brandon, a junior pre-mass communication major, introduced himself as “the prettiest guy on the radio,” as he enthusiastically aired a mix of sports talk and rap over the airways.

Brandon and John opened the show debating whether the Seahawks could stop the strength of the Steelers’ offense in the upcoming Super Bowl; they later moved into topics ranging from debates on what college team will win the next National Championship, to Kobe Bryant’s record 81 points in one game.

Brandon said the range of topics that inspired the show were generated from a group of guys who live and breathe sports. The show requires hours of research prior to each broadcast.

“I’ve always been a big sports fan, and when I’m hanging out with my friends we always talk about sports, so I thought, why not put it on the air?” Brandon said. “It’s just two guys who are very strongly opinionated about their ideas and we talk about it.”

The show is currently in its second semester on the air, but Brandon said Fall Semester 2005 was just a test run to see how the show would be formatted for listeners.? This semester, Brandon is planning to get coaches and students more involved in the show by having guest speakers.

“We will have a lot of students from Georgia College come and talk about sports,” Brandon said. “Not athletes. Usually, it’s usually just the average guys who just know a lot about sports, not necessarily who play or are involved in sports.”

Brandon said having his own sports talk show has been his dream since high school.? He gives his father much of the credit for his love of sports.

“I have been trying to do this since high school,” Brandon said. “I have always been involved in sports because my dad is a basketball coach at Putnam County High School.? My father has been a basketball, football, track and cross country coach.”
