Emily’s ‘Music Notes’

Our lives are filled with music. From the time we enter this world until the moment we leave it, we breathe in music. It is incredible to look at the way music influences our lives-it creates life and tells a story.

“Who would have thought that noises and pitches arranged in a particular way could produce something so grand?” junior health education major Tyler Ver said. “Music communicates to someone like nothing else in the universe can.”

Music has the power to recall the past and bring forth a memory. It can speak the mood of a movie and express the mind of the listener.

Music has different meanings for different people. For some, music is simply the noise that drowns out life’s silence. For others, music is what stirs the soul to live on.

“I feel that music can be the most passionate way to express love, especially for God,” said Shantal Westermann, freshman nursing major.

I can’t function without music. I am a musician and a lover of great music. It is what makes me feel most alive and it allows me to express certain truths, otherwise inexpressible.

“Music is different than any other form of communication,” said Jeremy McBryar, senior biology and history major. “It goes beyond mere words and touches those primal forces with which we have lost contact.”

There are incredibly talented musicians right here in Milledgeville. You’ve seen them on campus. They are the ones carrying their cumbersome instruments around. They are the ones in class that drive you crazy because they are constantly tapping to the rhythm inside their body. They are the expressive ones who dress like rock stars; you know what I’m talking about. Maybe they are the ones who carry themselves quietly, keeping their sound within their souls.

The Colonnade has created a new place to celebrate music. Each week there will be an Upcoming Community Events Calendar listing concerts and shows in the area. Students can stay better informed of the local music scene as well as support local musicians and venues.

I intend to write reviews and features, covering local bands and musicians. Please contact me at Emily_ballard@ecats.gcsu.edu if you have any information concerning upcoming concerts or local musicians.
