Bobcats drop from first to fourth
The GC&SU Men’s Basketball team slowed their pace after reaching the number one spot in the Peach Belt Conference last week, and is now ranked fourth.
After three straight wins, the Bobcats, 11-6 overall (8-3 PBC), lost two consecutive conference games. Their last breakdown, by 20 points, was against conference contender Clayton State University.
Players are still trying to figure out the reason for such a slip following such a good run.
“Our team is strong and the reason we were playing well was because we have great team chemistry,” said junior-guard Aaron Gibbs. “We have to step up again.”
Senior guard Bryan Harrison also said he believes a lot in his team, as most players have improved a lot from last season.
There are nine games left until the Conference Tournament that will be held in Greenwood, SC, starting March 1. The Bobcats hope to find the way to victory again soon, and expectations for a good tournament are high.
“We have a long way until the Conference Tournament and we are working hard in order to get there well-seeded,” said Head Coach Terry Sellers. “It can help us by not having to play against the most technically strong teams in the first rounds.”
Sellers also said that Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, University of South Carolina Upstate and Clayton State University will be the most dangerous competitors at the Conference Tournament.
“In order to keep up with a good winning record and fight for a spot on the top of the conference, we will need to work on playing two halves equally well,” Sellers said. “We have been having difficulty on putting two halves together and (playing) at a high level during an entire game.”
The Bobcats won a road game last Wednesday against conference rival University of South Carolina Aiken, but still stand in fourth place in the PBC with a record of 9-3.
The Bobcats have a home game Saturday, Feb. 4, for their next challenge against conference rival Augusta State at 7:30 p.m. The Bobcats squeaked by Augusta State their first meeting earlier this season with a 61-60 win.
