The Sports Guy

The GC&SU Men’s Basketball team rolls into the final stretch of its season with a record of 8-2 and sits in second place in the Peach Belt Conference standings. The team lost a critical game on the road against Columbus State Wednesday, which gave Columbus State the PBC lead.

As the team faces the end of the season, it still has a good chance of clinching the top seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament. The Bobcats will play essential games against Clayton State and Armstrong Atlantic at home. They will face Clayton State this Saturday and Atlantic Armstrong on Feb. 6. The Bobcats have not lost a conference game at home this season and need to win these two games to stay in the hunt.

Besides GC&SU’s games there are also intense match-ups around the league that could ultimately affect the Bobcats chances of claiming the conference’s top seed.

One game that may be crucial in the standings in the weeks ahead is a contest involving Clayton State and USC Upstate on Feb. 4 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The two teams are currently locked in the standings with a record of 6-3.

Another game that may cause the standings to shuffle is a game between Clayton State and Columbus State on Feb. 6 in Columbus, Ga. A Clayton State win would help GC&SU reclaim the PBC lead.

The team could also use a little help from other teams around the conference. Don’t count out the little guy. The latter teams in the standings have been known to turn heads. Augusta State, 4-5, pulled off the conference upset of the year with their 64-58 win at Armstrong Atlantic State on Jan. 23. It was the Pirates first loss at home. The win ended AASU’s nine-game winning streak and knocked the Pirates from the top of the standings.?Armstrong Atlantic travels to Augusta State to play them once again on Feb. 1.

Another team that may be considered a spoiler is North Georgia College & State University. The team, 6-4, is looming in the shadows and could do some damage.

Although the Bobcats can see the light at the end of the tunnel, there are still several games to be played in the PBC. I still have full faith that the Bobcats can take the top seed in the conference tournament as long as they continue to stay undefeated in conference games at home. Also don’t overlook the teams in the conference cellar who can pop up and spoil the season.
