Lady Bobcats unable to keep pace

The GC&SU Women’s Basketball team lost a hard- fought struggle against the USC Aiken Pacers Monday, giving the Lady Bobcats five losses in the last six games.

LaWanna Leon, a senior forward was disappointed by the loss, but has not given up on the team’s future.

“We just need to keep our heads up,” said Leon. “If we get down on ourselves it won’t accomplish anything.”

Towards the end of the game the Lady Bobcats surged forward with a couple of quick turnovers and baskets, but the surge was too late. If the girls could play like they did in the last few minutes of the game, then they would have more success, Leon said.

Shanice Dawson, a sophomore guard/forward said she feels the Lady Bobcats have what it takes to find success.

“We know we were in a rut, but if we play like we know we can, then winning will follow,” Dawson said.

Head Coach John Carrick’s winning percentage since 1983 heightens the Lady Bobcats odds of winning. At 61 percent, Carrick’s winning percentage leaves little room for multi-game losing streaks. Carrick’s winning percentage in the past two years is even more notable at nearly 72 percent.

The Lady Bobcat’s onslaught of losses was a combination of good teams and poor shooting. The team’s field goal percentage Jan. 23 was 30.8 percent and their three-point field goal percentage was 14.3 percent.

Leon remains faithful to the future of the Lady Bobcat’s season.

“We need to come together as a team,” Leon said. “The past is behind us, so we need to focus on the future.”

The Lady Bobcats remain contenders in the Peach Belt Conference. The team was underestimated in past years as they knocked off the top seeds in the 2002 and 2004 Peach Belt Conference Tournament in March. Their success led them to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament.

“You’re always in competition until your dead,” Carrick said.

Dawson said she has learned from the onslaught of losses.

“We just can’t give up,” Dawson said. “There’s always gold at the end of the rainbow.”
