Harrison named Peach Belt player of the week

GC&SU senior guard Bryan Harrison was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 16.

To earn the honor, Harrison scored a career high 26 points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in a loss to USC-Upstate. He also scored 18 points, hitting 8-8 from the free-throw line, in a 84-80 win against North Georgia The Bobcats’ loss to USC-Upstate was the team’s first conference loss of the season.

“I was happy to win the award,” Harrison said. “I think I played good for the week, but it meant more because we got two wins.”

This is the first time Harrison has received the award, but said he could not have done it by himself.

“I really have to give credit to my team and my coach,” Harrison said. “Coach told me to be aggressive and my teammates got me the ball.”

Head coach Terry Sellers said that there is no shortage of good players in the PBC and winning the award was no small accomplishment.

“There are 12 teams in the Peach Belt and to be selected as Player of the Week from all of those other players is quite an honor,” Sellers said.

Harrison averaged 22 points, four rebounds and four assists a game while shooting 46 percent (12-26) from the floor, 60 percent (6-10) from the 3-point line and 82 percent (14-17) from the free-throw line.

“Over the last couple of games he’s been playing like an All-Conference caliber player and that’s the kind of player we thought we had when we signed him,” Sellers said.

Harrison’s teammate, senior forward Jeremy Mayweather, is the only other Bobcat to be named PBC Player of the Week this season.

“He deserves it,” Mayweather said. “He works hard and is one of the best point guards in the Peach Belt. Hopefully he can keep it going.”

Harrison is averaging 13.9 points-per-game for the Bobcats and followed up his Player of the Week award by tying a GC&SU single game record with 12 assists in a win against Lander University Jan. 18.

“I just try to play hard every night,” Harrison said. “You play hard every night and good things will happen.”

Sellers said it is good to see Harrison to continue to build off of a great season last year.

“He’s taking his game to another level and has been a great leader for us,” Sellers said. “I’m proud of him. He’s worked hard to get to where he is.”
