The Voice
In an era where words are more dangerous than bullets, and information can alter the course of the continents, the voice of the next generation has never been more vital.
While students filter in through the collegiate system it becomes ever more essential that those voices be heard. It’s true that we drink and party and enjoy ourselves, but our pride comes from knowing that we also work our hands to the bone in supplying that information.
But The Colonnade is more than just an avenue for the news. We also understand the need for students to exercise their opinions as well, which is why for this particular issue we’ve allowed students with something to say to be heard.
College binge drinking, school facility hours and campus safety are just a few of the issues addressed by the undergraduates on page six. Only by exploring such issues from all sides, from the furthest left to the radical right, are we given license to form our own educated opinions on the subject.
As students of a liberal arts college, we owe everyone a voice. We’ll never criticize or chastise such opinions. We’ll never scream over those who have something to say. No one should have to scream to be heard at GC&SU, and part of our job at The Colonnade is ensuring an environment where no one will ever have to.
Only in an environment where free speech is encouraged will opinions be allowed to evolve from one-dimensional ideas into explored beliefs strong enough to withstand the tests of life after college.
The world is centralizing. Every day brings us new advancements in wireless networking, satellite control capabilities and digital technology. Much will come as the Internet spreads across the third world and we become more adept to its limitless benefits and destruction. Students who leave this school will be more prepared and more supplied with the ammunition necessary to fight the war of words that has resulted from the digital age.
We encourage you (whether you’re a student, staff or faculty member, alumni or community member) to exercise your opinion as well. We accept letters to the editor anytime (E-mail us at colonnadeletters@gcsu.edu).
Or if you just want to voice your opinion in a sentence or two on our Litter Box on page 5, you can send us an Instant Message at ColonnadeVent.
Chances are, if you’re feeling a certain way, so is someone else out there who is just afraid to be heard. By speaking for yourself, you could be a voice for many others.
