Men and women trounce Lander
The GC&SU Bobcats beat the Lander University Bearcats 69-48 at the Centennial Center on Wednesday night to remain atop the Peach Belt Conference standings. The win improves the Bobcats record to 7-1 in the PBC and 10-4 overall.
“Every conference win you can get is good,” said Head Coach Terry Sellers. “You’ve just got to take it one game at a time.”
Leading the Bobcats was senior forward Jeremy Mayweather who scored a team best 23 points.
“We came out focused, ready to play,” Mayweather said. “If we can do that every night, we could be a real powerhouse.”
But Mayweather would not have been able to score all of his points without the help of senior guard Bryan Harrison. Harrison tied a GC&SU record by dishing out 12 assists.
“I’m happy to be in the record book, but I couldn’t have done it with out my teammates,” Harrison said. “I gave them the ball, but they had to make the shots.”
Mayweather said he was glad that Harrison is finally getting the credit he deserves.
“He’s a great point guard, one of the best in the Peach Belt,” Mayweather said. “He does all the things to make his teammates better.”
Seller said that Harrison’s performance is another notch in a great season.
“Bryan is having an outstanding season,” Sellers said. “He did a great job tonight protecting the ball and finding the open man. He deserves to be in the record book.”
Harrison, who led the Bobcats with 14.7 points a game entering Wednesday’s match up, scored on five points, but said it showed the team’s offensive balance.
“Anybody can play good on any night,” Harrison said. “I’m not worried about how many points I have. I just want to win.”
Sellers said the team has performed well so far this season, but if they do not make some adjustments they will not be able to carry on their success.
“I feel that we should be a little farther along,” Sellers said. “I think we have too many break downs on defense and we are not executing our offense like we should. I honestly think that we should be doing those things better at this time in the season.”
Mayweather said the team has worked hard to get to where they are and he enjoys the challenge of being the best team in the PBC.
“Just knowing that every game guys are going to come at you 100 percent because you are on top feels great,” Mayweather said. “I like the competitiveness.”
The Bobcats still have 12 PBC games remaining, but for tonight they are the best team in the conference.
