Lady Bobcats dominate 84-65, break four game losing streak

The Lady Bobcats defeated the Lander University Lady Bearcats 84-65 on Jan. 18 at the Centennial Center. The Lady Bobcats improve 3-5 in the PBC and 8-7 overall.

The win snapped the Lady Bobcats four game losing streak and prevented them from dropping five straight games for the first time since the 1985-1986 season.

The four game losing streak tied the Lady Bobcats’ longest losing streak since becoming a NCAA Division II team in 1991.

Head Coach John Carrick was glad to pick up the win, but did not place any more significance on this win than any other win.

“You always feel good when you win,” Carrick said. “It’s like going home at Christmas and seeing the family.”

Senior forward LaWanna Leon said it felt great to finally end the losing streak after the team has worked so hard.

“We’ve been on a losing streak for so long that it’s about time we put our foot down,” Leon said. “It’s been hard for us because we’ve given our best, but it has not been enough.”

The Lady Bobcats gained valuable experience during the losing streak, Leon said. It is something the team will take with them for the remainder of the season.

“It has opened our eyes,” Leon said. “We had to ask ourselves why are we losing and it really brought us together.”

Leon led the Lady Bobcats with 17 points and added 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

One area in which the Lady Bobcats have struggled recently is with second half three point shooting. Over the previous three games the team has shot just 17.2 percent from behind the arch in the second half compared to 45 percent in the first half.

Against Lander University the Lady Bobcats matched their 35 percent three point shooting in the first half with 35.3 percent in the second half.

Junior guard Brandy Holsendoph shot 4-8 from behind the arch to finish with 12 points, a career high. Her previous career high was three points.

“It feels good,” Holsendoph said. “I’m not used to it though.”

Carrick said Holsendoph got more playing time because Lander University was not covering Lindsey Smith, the Lady Bobcats starting guard, and Holsendoph is a better shooter.

“Brandi can shoot,” Carrick said. “She missed her first couple of shots, but I knew she could make them.”

Carrick said it was hard from him to determine how the losing streak had affected his team, but he has seen a difference in how they approach the game.
