The Voice

Believe it or not, we are at the end of another semester. For the freshmen, it is the completion of their first semester, while it is the end of an era for the seniors who participate in commencement next week. But whether you are a freshman, senior or in between, the winter break should be used as a time of reflection.

The event that perhaps, remembered most from this semester was the devastation that Hurricane Katrina laid out on the Gulf Coast. We saw the hearts of our students pour out as GC&SU welcomed students from Louisiana and Mississippi that were displaced after the hurricane and some of our students going to Mississippi to help the victims.

After the hurricane , students were forced to deal with gas prices that were over $3 a gallon. Students were forced to either not spend as much money as they were used to and used that money to buy gas or conserve gas by not driving to their home on the weekends. Thankfully, gas has now dropped to under $2 a gallon, and students can now worry about using their money on Christmas presents instead.

While Hurricane Katrina was a national tragedy, the death of student Evan Luke was a personal tragedy. The loss of a fellow student, no matter the circumstances is a tragedy in itself. Vigils, prayers and words of support will not bring Evan back to our world, but the university’s sympathies will be remembered forever to those close to him.

On a more positive note, we saw another GC&SU student make headlines outside of the campus as Zach Johnson ran for city council against long-time councilman and GC&SU Director of Public Safety Ken Vance. The campaign encouraged students to have a voice in the election, as well is the Milledgeville community.

We have also seen new trends develop as more and more students have picture albums on the Internet on Facebook and listen to music on their iPods.

We can go on and on about the events of this semester, but the most important aspect that students should reflect about is what they have accomplished this semester.

Have a great winter break. We’ll return Jan. 20!

Happy Holidays!
