Eateries to debut in 2006

More work opportunities will soon be available to members of the GC&SU community through the arrival of four new restaurants that will be located on the property in front of the Days Inn.

Kurani Pizza Inc. of Atlanta has announced that it plans to open four restaurants on their newly acquired North Columbia Street property in January. Wing Street, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s and A&W will be housed in two buildings, Pizza Hut and Wing Street in one and Long John Silver’s and A&W in the other.

Kamran Kurani, concept development director for Kurani Pizza Inc., felt that Milledgeville was a great place to do business.

“We think it’s a great town and a great location. You will be able to get anything you want to eat in one spot,” said Kurani.

The combined Long John Silver’s and A&W site will be the first of its kind in central Georgia and only the third in the state. Long John Silver’s, founded in 1969, is the world’s most popular quick-service seafood chain with more than 1,200 restaurants worldwide. It’s soon to be neighbor, A&W, is famous for its root beer products. Founded in 1922, A&W focuses on serving classic American fare, such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, ice cream sundaes and root beer floats.

According to the Pizza Hut Web site, Pizza Hut was the first major pizza chain to serve chicken wings, more than ten years ago. Milledgeville’s first Pizza Hut, located on South Wayne Street, was destroyed in August 2004 when a fire broke out in the attic. Kurani was at the forefront when the new building was being built on its existing property. In 2004, Kurani purchased the franchisee rights to Pizza Hut and expressed his interest in opening another location in the northern part of town. “Milledgeville is a college town. We thought (Pizza Hut and Wing Street) would be perfect,” Kurani said. According to Kurani, the new Pizza Hut and Wing Street restaurant will be both a dine-in and carryout establishment that will seat 66 customers, as opposed to the current carryout-only version on the southern side of town.

With the recent October closing of Locos Grill and Pub downtown, some students are now in the job market. With the addition of these four restaurants, more jobs will be available to them.

Junior Ana Colon-Olivieri, an exercise science major, expressed her joy about the new restaurants coming to town.

“I love it. It gives us such a variety instead of going to all the same places, especially now that Locos is closed. We now have new options. I am still waiting for an Olive Garden, though,” Colon-Olivieri said. “In the last three years, so much in the town has developed. I think that if this doesn’t say that the town is growing, I don’t know what does.”

Junior Cristin Athans, a mass communication major, was also very excited about the change in food choices.

“I feel like having all these new places in town is a good idea. We need more sit-down restaurants. I am all for it. It will also give more job opportunities for college kids to utilize,” Athans said. “I know a lot of students are going to be grateful.”

After breaking ground and building in the upcoming months, the restaurants are expected to open in January 2006.
