Scott retires after 29 years

A reception honoring retiring GC&SU Registrar Sarah Scott was held in the Hoke Dining Room of Maxwell Student Union on Nov. 10.

Scott retired as GC&SU registrar on Oct.1 after 29 years of service at GC&SU. Scott cited her health as the primary reason for her retirement.

“I’ve been battling illnesses for a year and a half now, so I need to concentrate on getting well,” Scott said.

Members of Scott’s family and GC&SU colleagues attended the reception, where Scott was presented with a degree as her retirement present from Dr. Paul Jones, vice president of institutional research and enrollment management. The degree serves as a certification of her 29 years of work at the university.

“I’m not big on receptions, but it is nice that (my colleagues) took the time to put this together,” Scott said.

Scott came to GC&SU in 1976 and began her career as an admissions secretary. During her career at GC&SU, Scott served as section supervisor, assistant director of records, and director of records before being named registrar in 1996. As registrar, Scott was responsible for coordinating records for registration and transcripts as well as verifying all degrees for graduation.
“She knows the history of record-keeping, the insides and the outsides at this university,” said Maryllis H. Wolfgang, assistant to the vice president and Scott’s colleague for nearly 20 years.

Wolfgang will miss Scott’s friendship and the help she has received during her time at the university.

“(Scott) has been a mentor, a friend, and a colleague to me for more than 20 years,” Wolfgang said.

Jones, who is serving as interim registrar until the university finds a full-time replacement, has worked with Scott for only three years, but he has been impacted by Scott’s work.

“She is a dedicated professional, and I have enjoyed working with her tremendously in the short time that I have been here,” Jones said.

While Scott gets her health back to full strength, she will use her spare time to concentrate on her family.

“I’m going to spend time with my two grandkids, travel with my husband and become more involved with my church,” Scott said.
