Alumnus joins GIVE Center staff
Paul Sedor officially filled the position as the GIVE Center’s first assistant director on Oct. 24.
The GIVE Center clocked 15,000 volunteer hours last year, according Director of the GIVE Center Kendall Stiles. Her increased work load made it necessary for the GIVE Center to request assistance.
“When I first talked to Kendall about seeing if we can get a job here back in late January, we knew it was a long shot, but we figured we might as well start doing things,” Sedor said. “It wasn’t until the first of August that the school finally said ‘yes we will let the job be there.’”
The job was open to anyone who wanted to apply for the position, and final interviews were held the week of Oct. 10. Three equally qualified candidates were in the final running for the position, said Stiles.
“When Paul expressed interest in the position, we were pleased. It’s always nice to keep talented people such as him at the University after they graduate,” Stiles said.
Sedor graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He said he worked many hours in the GIVE Center while attending GC&SU, and when it was time to decide what he wanted to do, non-profit seemed to make sense.
“I realized I loved working with nonprofit agencies, and I loved doing volunteer work and helping plan programs,” Sedor said.
Sedor said the interview process took an entire day, beginning with a dinner the night before.
He said he interviewed with the SEARCH committee, campus life, student affairs, community partners, GC&SU students, Kendall Stiles, Director of Campus Life and Student Activities Tom Miles, Vice President for Student Affairs Bruce Harshbarger and Senior Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Paul Jhar.
“There was a dinner, a breakfast and a lunch and seven interview groups.
I also interviewed with students, so students got to say what they thought. Then there was a final wrap up with Tom and Kendall,” Sedor said.
During his first week on the job, Sedor said his duties will include being in contact with the student volunteers and event planning.
“I will be working more with individual volunteers, and Kendall will be working more with the service leaders components,” Sedor said.
He also said he will be working on being in better contact with volunteers through different uses of technology.
“We want to send out an e-newsletter once a week that will tell the volunteers what is going on,” Sedor said. “Our plans are to make a GIVE Center Facebook group so we can have access to our volunteers that way too. We want to start reaching out to our volunteers wherever they are.”
Student coordinator Andy Mobley said he did not know anyone more deserving than Sedor because he had worked with the GIVE Center for so long.
“I don’t know anybody more deserving than him,” Mobley said. “He’s been here for a while now.”
Work-study student Denise Chambers said she thought Sedor will make a positive impact on the GIVE Center.
“Having him work here has been positive for the GIVE Center,” said Chambers. “His creative ideas compliment what we are all about at the GIVE Center.”
