The Grove to offer student apartments
A new apartment complex, offering fully-furnished amenities, is being built on West Franklin Street, across from the Centennial Center.
The Grove is an apartment community owned by Campus Crest Properties, an independent company not affiliated with GC&SU. Campus Crest has 3 other locations of the Grove in 2 different states including an apartment community at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.
“The owners of the company wanted to offer new housing for students in Milledgeville,” said Christine Head, general manager of the Grove.
Last week, the Grove advertised their project by the fountain on Front Campus by providing flyers and Papa John’s pizza to anyone who was interested in possibly applying for an apartment at the Grove. There was also an open meeting last Tuesday in the Pine Lounge of the Student Activities Center for any student organizations who wanted to learn more.
“The Grove has targeted the Greek organizations as a group who is need of housing and who could be a benefit for their community,” said Ron Lunk, assistant director for Student Activities & Greek Life.
Although the Grove is not affiliated with GC&SU, the University Housing Department has posed no major objections to the building of the complex.
“They (Campus Crest) have made a business decision to build a complex here in Milledgeville because they feel there is a perceived need for student housing, and they have the right to do that,” said Paul Jahr, director of University Housing.
The Grove will consist of 13 buildings, and Head hopes that some of the GC&SU sororities and fraternities will rent some of the space that is being provided.
“We (the Grove) did not think the Greeks had adequate housing for their organizations,” Head said, “They live in some of the houses, but the houses do not have much space. The Grove would be a place where a lot of more of the Greeks can live together.”
The apartments in the Grove will consist of either 2 or 3 bedrooms and cost $450 per person in contrast to $474 per person for a student in a 4-bedroom apartment at Bobcat Village.
The apartments will be fully furnished and will contain a full kitchen, washer and dryer, private bathrooms in each bedrooms, and all utilities, including cable and high-speed internet.
The Grove will also have their own activity center called the Spot. The Spot will have game rooms, tanning booths, a pool, game rooms, a coffee caf? and a movie lounge with a big screen.
The project is estimated to cost $20 million, and the company hopes to be finished in time for the fall semester of 2006.
“We hoping to finish this summer so we can have residents move in early,” Head said, “But the official moving day is August 1, 2006.”
