Smoke detected in library elevator

On Nov. 4, 2005, at about 6 a.m., Officer Campbell and Officer Dixon were sent to Russell Library in response to a fire alarm. The officers detected a strong smell of smoke on all the floors of the library, all clustered near the elevator. The Milledgeville Police and Fire Department arrived on the scene, where it was determined that the likely cause of the smoke was burning hydraulic fluid in the elevator. The officers cut power to the elevator and notified the Physical Plant.

Solicitors ousted from Adams Hall, campus

On Nov. 4, 2005 at about 8:56 p.m., Sgt. Ennis was sent to Adams Hall to check on three males that were walking the halls of the building without a student escort. Sgt. Ennis made contact with the men, who all claimed that they were in the building promoting cruise ship packages. The men also claimed that they had forms and paperwork for the various vacation specials with them. Sgt. Ennis explained the rules for solicitation and for residence hall visitation. All three men were banned from all GC&SU property indefinitely. One of the men admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the evening and tested positive on the Alco-Sensor. That man was arrested and transported to the Milledgeville Police Department and charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol. The other two were released from the scene after their pictures were taken for reference.

Cars towed for blocking officer’s car

On Nov. 5, 2005, at about 8:08 p.m., Officer G. Williams returned from foot patrol to discover that his patrol car was blocked in the parking lot because a row of cars had double-parked in front of it. He also discovered that two vehicles were blocking the fire lane, and that two more were illegally parked in handicapped parking places. Another woman on the scene had also had her car blocked in, and she needed to get herself and her small child home. Old Capitol Wrecker was called, and two of the vehicles were towed. The owners of the other vehicles arrived on the scene, and were allowed to move their vehicles. One of the drivers later approached Officer Williams and stated that he planned to file a complaint statement stating that the officers were being unprofessional. While speaking to this driver, police dispatch called and said the driver had called dispatch earlier in the evening and had been very rude on the phone. The driver still stated he would file a complaint at a later date.

Local package store sells to sixteen-year-old buyer

On Nov. 6, 2005, at about 8:30 p.m., Officer Campbell and Officer Dixon saw three males standing near a parked vehicle in the parking lot of the courthouse upper deck. Contact was made with one of the men, a sixteen year old, who had tried to kick a beer bottle under the car as the officers approached. When the officers asked about the beer, the kid responded that the beer had belonged to him. He also told the officers that he had purchased a six-pack of beer and a quart of malt liquor at a local package store. The juvenile agreed to go to the package store with the officers to identify the clerk who sold him the beer. The officers contacted the clerk, who admitted that he had not checked for ID. The clerk was issued a citation for Sale of Alcohol to a Minor.

Fight leads to high-speed pursuit

On Nov. 5, 2005, at about 10:49 p.m., Officer G. Williams was sent to Bobcat Village in response to a fight in progress. By the time he arrived, the people involved had fled the building. While Officer Williams searched the area, a witness found one of the students in his vehicle. Officer Williams pursued the car, ending up on a high-speed pursuit on the by pass. The vehicle finally pulled over on Highway 22. The driver was arrested and transported to the Milledgeville Police Department, where he was charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol. At the station, the driver identified the other two involved in the fight. The other two were arrested about 45 minutes later, and were transferred to the Milledgeville Police Department. Both were charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol and Simple Battery.
