The Voice

On a campus as small and friendly as GC&SU’s, whoever thought a murder would occur? Sadly enough, it has, and the cold reality is still setting in.

Evan Luke was taken from us the morning after Halloween. GC&SU has lost a fine student, and many people have lost a good friend. Parents have lost their child. His other relatives have lost a loved one. The Kappa Sigma members are missing a beloved brother. All of us who knew Evan are now missing a part of our lives that can never be replaced.

As college students, we sometimes think we are immune to death, and we find it a hard concept to grasp that it could easily happen to us, just as it happened to Evan. But we must face the truth that we’re not invincible, and petty arguments can obviously turn into fatalities during the most unexpected times.

GC&SU has lost students in the past, largely due to freak accidents. Never before, though, has one of our own been torn from our community in so heinous a fashion. The loss of Evan was a senseless tragedy. A fine young man who was just here is not gone, and we are left with only the happy memories that Evan brought us in life.

In light of the recent death of Evan, the staff of The Colonnade would like to offer those close to Luke our condolences on behalf of the GC&SU student body. When a tragic event occurs, we must create a community that provides everyone with support. His death impacts us all differently, but we are all impacted in some way or another.

Evan has passed on, but his friends and family, and anyone with the heart to keep Evan dear to them, can keep his memory alive. We should learn a lesson from Evan’s death. Treasure your life, and the lives of your family, your friends and your loved ones. Cherish every day that you have on this earth, because you never know when your last day will dawn. Take a lesson from Evan. As long as you keep his lesson in your heart, Evan will never truly be gone.

We realize that it’s difficult to deal with the initial shock of death and comprehend its implications. It’s easy to get caught up in the stress of our busy day-to-day lives, especially at this point in the semester. But we must step back and consider what will prevent the reoccurrence of this tragedy, and be more careful and realize that every action has a consequence.

Luckily, we are fortunate enough to have a Counseling Center here with staff members that welcomes each and every one of us. They’re there for us, whether we just need someone to vent to, or whether we need to talk about serious matters such as Evan’s death. They want to listen and they can help. Take advantage of it.

Rest in Peace, Evan.
