Historic value should affect race

Dear Editor,

Walking down the streets of our wonderful city, it is obvious that election time is upon us. Candidates’ placards are in many of the lawns in district four, urging passers-by to vote for either veteran councilman Mr. Vance or the student-newcomer Mr. Johnson.

I have noticed that the homes supportive of Mr. Vance’s reelection are well-kept, have all their vehicles legally parked and have their landscaping intact. In contrast, many of the homes supportive of Mr. Johnson’s election are some of our cities fines but are in a degenerate state of disrepair with couches on the historic verandas and trucks parked on the lawns.

This urges one to analyze the candidates’ respective appreciation for the historic value of Milledgeville and its consequent impact on tourism in our community.

Do the residents of these dilapidated homes supportive of Mr. Johnson’s election have an appreciation for property taxes, or are they temporary four-year squatters while attending GC&SU?

As a student resident of district four, it is apparent to me that most students lack appreciation for this city’s historic value and its monetary impact in the community.

The relationships between the city, the citizens of the historic district, the university and the local government are too important to be entrusted to a novice, and while Mr. Johnson maintains my utmost respect, it is imperative that the voters appreciate the fragility of our city’s situation in terms of the revenue generated by visitors to Georgia’s Antebellum Capital.
