A Fan’s Note
Today marks the 50th anniveristy of the death of Cy Young.
Many of you heard of the Cy Young Award given every year to the best pitcher in the NL and the AL.
But how many of you actually know what Young accomplished in his career?
Young played from 1890 to 1911, and during his career, he set the standard by which all other pitchers would be measured.
A great season for a starting pitcher is winning 20 or more games.
In his 22 year career, Young not only had 10 season with 20 or more wins, but he also have five season with 30 or more wins.
These are numbers unheard of in baseball today.
One of the greatest achievements for a pitcher is to record 300 or more wins during a career.
This has only been done 22 times in baseball history.
Young won 511 games. The next closest pitcher is Walter Johnson with 417 wins.
Young and Johnson are the only two pitchers in baseball history to record more than 400 wins in a career.
Complete games are a rarity in baseball today. Young threw 749 complete games.
Below I have compared Young’s career stats with Roger Clemens, who has won seven Cy Young Awards in his career.
