Sigma Alpha Omega hosts costume ball to benefit kids

Special to The Colonnade

Georgia College & State University’s Sigma Alpha Omega Christian Sorority is hosting its first-annual Costume Ball to benefit “Dance to the Beat so Kids Can EAT” Friday, Oct. 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. The big event is open to campus and will be held on the front lawn.

This event will include a live concert as well as dance music, plus caramel and candy apples, cotton candy and other refreshments will be sold. Complementary hot apple cider and hot chocolate will be provided to create that autumn feeling that only the crisp, October weather can bring! Door prizes will be raffled off and costume contest awards given.

Students are encouraged to bring can goods to support “Dance to the Beat so Kids Can EAT,” a benefit that will donate the cans collected to children in need of food through the GIVE Center.

“We’re anticipating this event to play a big role in bringing the campus together and to give everybody something super fun to do for Halloween weekend,” Sarah Riordan, an SAO social committee member said.

“We’re excited about encouraging fellow students to get involved in the community by combining a night of fun with community service,” SAO Vice President Jillian Downey said.

The Costume Ball would not amount to the success that SAO is hoping for if it were not for the eager participation and donations of local businesses such as Amici’s, Friedman’s Jewelers, Classic Motors of Milledgeville, the Georgia National Fair and more.

Sigma Alpha Omega was founded at GC&SU in the fall of 2003. Though it is still new to the campus, they have 33 active sisters and continue to grow. SAO is a social service sorority that delights and prides itself with its contribution to service activities. The girls have given many community service hours to such organizations as the Susan G. Komen’s 3-Day Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, local pregnancy centers, individual service opportunities, and will be serving the victims of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Biloxi, Miss. on a mission trip in December.
