Sequins & Smiles hosts Retro Pageant, ’80s night

Special to The Colonnade

Sequins & Smiles is hosting a night of 80s fun at its Retro Pageant on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Georgia College & State University Magnolia Room.

The Retro Pageant costs $2 and the event will include rocking ’80s music and raffle drawings for great prizes. You can purchase tickets at the door or from sorority members.

Sequins & Smiles is a nonprofit, student-run campus organization providing formal attire to underprivileged girls in Baldwin County.

“I hope a lot of people will come out to the Retro Pageant and support Sequins & Smiles,” said Ashley Tramontin, Co-Student coordinator, “We want this pageant to be a fun and entertaining evening that will get us more recognition on campus.”

Different Registered Student Organizations on-campus will each have one representative in the pageant. The girl will first model an ’80s dress from the Sequins & Smiles closet. Then each girl will model an elegant evening gown also from the donated dresses in the closet.

The Panhellenic Council has chosen Sequins & Smiles as this year’s group philanthropy.

“We thought it would be the best philanthropy that we can do the most for,” said Jennifer Smith, president of Panhellenic for GC&SU, “Who else could give more dresses than sorority girls who have formals twice a year?”

Sororities will be participating in a contest to see who can bring the most dresses and accessories. The winner will be announced at the end of the pageant and will receive money towards a DJ at their next formal event.

There will be a donation box for all attending to drop any dresses, jewelry, shoes, handbags or unopened makeup upon arrival.

If you would like to donate dresses and accessories throughout the school year you can drop them off at the GIVE Center every third Monday of the month.

Sequins & Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides formal wear to less fortunate girls in the Milledgeville area who, without the dresses would not be able to attend their formal events.
