Disc club provides ultimate sport

The Bobcat Frisbee Club takes disc sports very seriously. Not even autumn’s premature darkness could stop them from practicing- they have discs that glow in the dark.

The club was formed during Spring 2003 in response to tremendous interest on campus.

“Our mission is to promote disc sports on campus, which primarily includes Ultimate Frisbee and disc golf,” said Doug Oetter, BFC faculty sponsor.

Just to clarify: disc golf, as the name implies, is very much like golf. The object is to complete a course, usually 18 holes, in as few throws as possible. The course is laid out like a golf course, with each hole played in sequence. The number of throws is accumulated, and the person completing the course with the fewest throws is the winner.

In contrast, Ultimate Frisbee is a game similar to soccer. Players must pass the disc to move it down the field. Once in possession of the disc, a player must stop running. A goal is scored when a pass is completed into the opponents’ end zone.

The BFC has an Ultimate Frisbee team that competes against other schools across the region.

“We go to tournaments and play against other college teams. We have strong rivalries against UGA B-team, Georgia Southern, College of Charleston and Valdosta State,” said Oetter, a geography professor.

Tournaments last for an entire weekend and can consist of many individual games.

“I guess the most unique thing is that you go to tournaments rather than play games,” said junior business major Chris Voellinger. “There are no referees; it’s a really spirited game. Honesty and integrity are important.”

Oetter said that the club would like to see more students enjoying disc sports.

“We encourage participation. Ultimate is a very energetic and active sport. It’s a full body workout, and it’s community oriented,” he said.

The Ultimate team practices three nights a week. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for team practice, but Wednesdays are pick-up games that are open to anyone.

“(Wednesday nights) are not really intense. We’re just throwing around the disc,” senior international business major Mark Poole said.

The club has proposed a permanent disc golf course; both on- and off- campus sites are being considered.

“We are actively working to develop and construct a disc golf course for the campus and local community,” Oetter said. “It has all the elements of golf except the green fees.”
