InfoPage details construction
Orange cones, power drills, men with hard hats and roadblocks seem to be the usual atmosphere around GC&SU these days.
But, what exactly are they doing, and when is it all going to stop? Answers to these questions along with many others will now be addressed by the new construction update link on the GC&SU InfoPage.
Now when a student accesses the InfoPage, a construction update link is on the right side of the page. The University Communications Department and the Physical Plant have come together in an effort to provide students, faculty and staff with the most up-to-date information concerning university construction and how it may effect parking, road closures and students’ overall routes to school.
With so much going on on-campus, the site provides convenience and will hopefully make it easier for everyone.
Director of University Communications Mitch Clarke is one of the many staff members involved in the project.
“I hope this site helps students as well as faculty and staff stay on top of projects that might cause disruption of the normal traffic flow on campus,” Clarke said.
Many new projects are now underway. Bell Hall is still being renovated and will be complete at the end of spring, becoming the last building of university housing to be renovated. Three of the crosswalks are now being redone to increase visibility, so that students will cross at the walk instead of in the middle of the road. These crosswalks are located across from the Student Activities Center, by Herty Hall and across from the library. Landscaping and a project to create a plaza in the area on the south side of the library and Russell Auditorium are now in progress as well. The Parks Hall parking lot and the area by the Maxwell Student Union will be replaced by a beautifully landscaped plaza and a few parking spots.
On the flip side of the excitement and anticipation surrounding the new projects and the end results, many students are concerned about the construction and its effects on parking.
“Driving to school everyday is just a hassle. Parking is ridiculous to find, and the construction going on makes it even worse,” Junior Jena Tripp said.
Another student, sophomore Erin Moschak, has an even harder time finding parking.
“I live out at West Campus and have a hard time finding parking everyday. Sometimes I take the shuttle, but it’s not always time consistent. Because of this, I tried to get a parking pass; however, (I) was declined due to the fact that I live in Bobcat,” Moschak said.
Many students living on West Campus struggle with this same situation.
The construction has been going on at GC&SU for quite some time now and has interfered in the daily lives of many students, faculty and staff members. However, the new construction update link on the InfoPage has been created in an attempt to inform everyone in the GC&SU community about new projects, traffic issues and road closings in a timely manner.
