PBC Player of the Week
Recently, GC&SU soccer player Meredith Moran was named the Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer Player of the Week.
Moran was awarded the honor after scoring four goals in the span of two games.
“She scored two goals in back-to-back games,” Head Women’s Soccer Coach Robert Parr said. “Those goals helped us go on a pretty good winning streak, so that was why she won the award.”
Moran’s goals lead the Lady Bobcats to a three-game winning streak. During the streak, Moran had 11 shots, nine of which were on goal.
Moran’s two-goal games came against Lambuth and USC Aiken. Her final shot in the USC Aiken’s match was a game winner.
Moran shies away from the spotlight, preferring to point to a more experienced team as the reason for their resent success.
“We have older players,” Moran said. “Last year we had mostly freshman with a couple of sophomores. But this year we have had some people transfer in, and now we are a more experienced team.”
With this new found experience comes a greater leadership role for Moran.
“I think that I have been more of a leader this year,” Moran said. “As a freshman, I looked up to the upperclassmen to kind of lead the way.”
Parr agrees that Moran has become a team leader but stresses the importance of the team sharing the burden.
“(Meredith) is certainly a team leader, but we emphasize leadership across the board,” Parr said. “I want everyone to know that they are expected to provide leadership one this team whether it be varsity or not.”
Before coming to GC&SU, Moran was a standout player at Brookwood High School.
In her senior year, Moran led her team to a state championship. On this team, Moran played a defensive position instead of her current position of striker forward.
“It is strange because in high school, I played sweeper which is the complete opposite of what I play now,” Moran said.
Her move from sweeper to striker was made this year when Parr noticed she how comfortable she was around the goal.
“We kind of discovered her (ability) last spring season,” Parr said. “Last year we really did not have the depth of personal to play (there). We saw that she was very comfortable playing as a target player, and she was a really good finisher. She is very calm under pressure, and we noticed that she was scoring a lot of goals when she was close to the goal.”
Teammate Tami Pissott, who is also Moran’s roommate, said Moran definitely earned the award.
“I think she totally deserves it,” Pissott said. “She has worked very hard. I’ve got her autograph because I know that she is going to make it big. I knew it all along.”
Moran is the second GC&SU Lady Bobcats player to win the award for Player of the Week award and the first this year.
Last season, Pissott also won the award.
Moran and the Lady Bobcats take on Tusculum tonight at Bobcat Soccer Field.
