New adviser leads way for GC&SU Marketing Club
On Sept. 12, GC&SU’s Marketing Club held its first meeting, where members discussed plans for the club under new adviser Dr. Joe Schwartz.
Schwartz, who taught business classes over the summer, will be taking the place of Dr. Jim Wenthe, who was advisor to the Marketing Club for 15 years. Wenthe retired in May but returned to lead the first meeting. He informed new members about the principles of the Marketing Club and the affiliated American Advertising Federation (AAF). Other than a short introduction, Schwartz did not say much at the meeting and allowed Wenthe and the officers of the club to talk.
“I do miss my students, but one thing I will never miss is all of the grading,” Wenthe said. “College would be much better if students came to class to learn and then leave, without worrying about tests and papers and teachers worrying about grading all of them.”
The Marketing Club’s purpose is to “provide real world experiences through student activities that are designed to increase an individual’s marketability and to give students a chance to explore the variety of choices available in the world of advertising” said Wenthe.
With their new faculty adviser, members in the club are excited about reaching out to the students of GC&SU to increase membership. Talks of working with other on-campus business clubs such as the Accounting Club and holding campus events like barbequing were topics at the first meeting.
The second meeting, held on Monday Oct. 3, involved talks of a scary movie night later this month and new GC&SU Marketing Club t-shirts designed by the club’s web master, Jake Grant who designed the Marketing Club’s logo this year. The club will also be joining with Delta Sigma Pi on Nov. 10 for the “Dress for Success” event which is a fashion show of business attire.
When the second meeting came to a close, members of the club met at the Baldwin Bowling Center with the Computer Science Club for a social and were intimidated by Schwartz’s bowling skills. The get-together was enjoyable for the club members, who are excited about other socials the club will host for the rest of the year.
As new faculty advisor for the Marketing Club, Schwartz also explained his goals for the club. He said he would like for students to feel that they have learned something about advertising and to use the club as a social opportunity for students with a common interest to get to know one another.
“Dr. Wenthe came to me and asked me to keep the Marketing Club at GC&SU going since it is such a strong club,” Schwartz said. “(The Club) is great for student exposure to the real world of advertising through conferences, companies and speakers.
The officers of the club also showed a great deal of excitement at the meeting and encouraged members to voice their opinions.
“The Marketing Club is a great way to build a resume, learn about business and most importantly to meet new people,” said Chase Topits, vice president of promotions and activities. “This year, our goal is to focus on getting more people involved by advertising the club on campus, which should be easy on us since advertising is what we do best.”
Students may attend a meeting to see what the Marketing Club is all about. The gathering will be the scary movie night on Oct. 26 starting at 8:15 p.m. The place the movie will be shown and the title of the movie has yet to be determined. Members will be notified through E-mail, and non-members who are interested can see Schwartz in Atkinson Hall 214.
