Intramurals keep students involved
For those who want to play sports in college but don’t want to have the pressure of being on a university team, GC&SU offers all its students the opportunity to play intramural sports.
The sports range from the recreational to the competitive.
Students can join an intramural team or even create one from scratch.
But how do you start?
One way is to check out the GC&SU campus life Web site, which contains a link to the intramural and recreational sports homepage.
The intramural page contains information about current intramurals, rules and regulations, tournament dates and special events. On this Web site, students can also find the policies and procedures associated with creating and captaining an intramural team.
According to the Web site, the first step is to check the intramural sports calendar for information about upcoming activities and entry deadlines on the sports currently available. Other places to find exact dates and additional information are on the intramural sports bulletin board in the Student Activities Center and in The Colonnade.
“This semester, the option to fill out the entry form online was available to students who wanted to play flag football. Later this year, students will also be able to complete the online form for intramural basketball, soccer and softball,” said Andy Hudgins, the coordinator of Intramural and Outdoor Programs. “Anyone who is interested in intramurals should definitely check out the Web site and sign up for a team.”
Junior Lowell Slagle has been playing on intramural teams at GC&SU since his freshman year.
“Creating a team was easy. I just asked around to see if any guys were interested in playing and filled out a form. That’s all there was to it,” said Slagle, a middle grades education major.
“The reason I like playing on intramurals is because I can have fun and enjoy playing the sports I played in high school without having the pressure of being good enough to play for the university.”
According to university policy, each intramural team member must complete the information requested on the entry form roster and an injury waiver form.
Intramural sports are open to anyone who wants to play, and Slagle encourages students to join a team and most of all, have fun.
Flag football, basketball, softball and soccer are just a few of the intramural sports currently available.
