Fashion Fix

Ten things that make you fashionable that you are probably already doing:

You Shower. This is fashionable because you walk on campus a little more fresh and awake. Your clean skin, teeth, and hair are visible indications on how balanced your life is. Your fresh smell says, “I care about me, so you should too!”

You express yourself. You understand fashion reveals a lot about you. It gives people insight into your background, your likes, your dislikes and your mood. For this reason, you take advantage of clothes by letting yourself shine through.

You read and are well traveled. Cultured and educated people naturally have good taste. In Kate Spade’s book “Style,” she makes a good point by saying, “style is a part of the way you live, so it makes perfect sense to keep an open mind and explore. Then you can adapt what you’ve learned and call it your own. That seems fair to me.”

You understand your hair. Hair is beautiful because it is unique to everyone. But because it is unique and complex, it can be your worst enemy. Figure out the science of your hair to make it work for you. This does take time, patience and observation, but it is a discipline worth mastering, and a discipline that doesn’t go unnoticed.

You own and enjoy unique pieces. If you are not feeling good about your hair, you just cover it with a beautiful vintage scarf! Good fashion is all about using interesting and tasteful pieces in a classic yet functional way. You focus on the essentials in your life and add attention getting details to them that will make them more visually pleasant. You never see buying an expensive purse or wallet as a waste of money, but rather as an investment in yourself.

You wear perfume. You wear it because you like the burst of energy it gives you when you are tired in the morning. Smelling nice makes the day more enjoyable, and it is a nice gesture for the people around you.

You have good manners. Good manners allow you to handle life with more dignity. In the “Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Decorum,” authors Kim Izzo and Ceri Marsh wrote, “The more gracefully she can handle life, the more she will attract like minded, gracious people.”

You are prepared. People know where to turn if they need to borrow a pencil because your favorite tote is always properly packed with the necessities for the day. This is your wardrobe showing others that you have a good head on your shoulders.

You know what business casual is. In certain circumstances, fashion rules do apply, and that is especially true in the professional world. You show respect for yourself and for potential employers, and in the process, reap the benefits by making good impressions and therefore landing the jobs you want.

You walk around confident and happy! You are happy with your life’s choices, especially those regarding your wardrobe. So hold your head up high and remember the most important accessory: your smile.
