Katrina social benefits victims
On Sept. 20, a social was held at the GC&SU Student Activities Center to collect food, clothes and toiletries for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The event was organized by the Black Student Alliance, the GS&CU chapter of the National Advancement for the Association of Colored People (NAACP), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
“We all [the organizations] came together and decided to have a get-together to bring GC&SU students together to support an effort,” said Natalie Gilchrist, president of the GC&SU chapter of NAACP.
President of the National Pan-Hellenic Council Ned Adkins initially came up with the idea of having a social event to aid the Hurricane Katrina victims. Adkins said he wanted to host the event as a way to motivate students to donate to a good cause and offer them the opportunity to have some fun in the process.
“I thought you may need to give the people something to get them to donate to the cause,” he said.
Each organization made monetary donations to fund the gathering and contributed donations for the victims as well. To enter the social, students had to bring at least one item to donate.
“By having a social, we, of course, wanted to collect as many donations as possible to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said Zaira Solano, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. “We also wanted students to get better acquainted with the various black organizations on campus.”
At the social, refreshments, nachos and ice-cream cake were served. Students played a variety of games, including ping-pong, pool and board games. They also listened to music, watched television and mingled. An area was set aside for the donated items.
“We all got together and ate, as well as gave money to those in need. Plus, I got to meet new people, which is a necessity for a first-year student,” said freshman creative writing major Bianca Longmire.
The social was held in the Pine Lounge from 8 p.m. until 12 p.m.
All the donations received went to Classic Motors of Milledgeville. The items were collected there and will be distributed to the Katrina victims.
