A Fan’s Notes

On Sept. 12, San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds made his return to the Giants’ lineup after missing most of the season due to three knee operations.

Bonds entered the season with 703 career homeruns – just 52 behind Hank Aaron.

In the 19 at bats since his return, Bonds has hit three homeruns.

Like it or not, Bonds will eventually break the homerun record.

It wasn’t long ago that many fans, myself included, were looking forward to Bonds breaking the record.

Now, I just want Bonds to go away.

Bonds’ entire career has been has been overshadowed by steroid allegations that aren’t going to go away any time soon, and it appears Bonds doesn’t want it to go away.

Recently, Bonds said that Congress was wasting its time by investigating steroid use in baseball.

Not very smart.

Instead of letting the steroid issue play itself out, Bonds is going out of his way to stir it up.

Maybe Bonds is clean. Maybe he hasn’t used any steroids. If that’s the case, can you blame him for saying that Congress is wasting its time?

But how many people out there truly believe Bonds is clean?

I think it is unfortunate that Bonds’ entire career is going to be forever put into question because of steroid allegations.

Sure, steroids may have helped a few balls get out of the park, but Bonds is more than just a power hitter. He’s a disciplined hitter.

Watch Bonds at the plate.

The pitcher is going to have to make good pitches or Bonds will put the ball out of reach.

Maybe what we can’t forgive Bonds for is not using steroids, but lying to us.

Bonds admitted to a grand jury that he unknowingly used steroids provided by his personal trainer.

Bonds said he thought the drugs were flaxseed oil and rubbing balm for arthritis.

Right.

Bonds said that he doesn’t care that his image has been tarnished, that he is playing because he enjoys the game.

Pete Rose had the same attitude.

Look where it got him.
