Info Tech Center offers new media
New initiatives by the Information Technology Center provide students with opportunities to gain experience with the latest media technology.
Technology Support Specialist Joe Windish said the improvements are part of the original plan of the new library and are coordinated with its grand re-opening on October 6.
The Center’s new media lab, located on the first floor of the Russell Library, offers students a variety of production, recording and editing equipment, such as digital video cameras and a MIDI keyboard.
In order to use the new equipment, students are required to attend a workshop where they are provided with information about new software, including iMovie, Final Cut and Pro Tools, as well as lessons in audio and video production.
“We need to know you understand how to use the equipment and the rules for its use,” said Windish. “We also require you use the equipment for some project, for instance, taking the camera to produce something.”
Workshops are held in the library every Tuesday night for the next six weeks, but Windish also said that new workshops will be added based on student interest.
Windish said he also plans to start a student working group called “Digital Graphics” or “Electronic Displays,” which will give students the opportunity to learn professional quality digital display technology.
“I’m using this semester to see how things go,” Windish said. “With this experience, I hope to shape the permanent usage guidelines.”
Amanda Hall, one of 19 lab assistants organizing the center’s improvements, said the hard work has paid off.
“I enjoy seeing students using and succeeding with the equipment,” said Hall. “Last Saturday, we held our first workshop, and there was a good turnout of students and staff. It was a great learning experience for all of us, including me.”
Sophomore Bailey Perdue said GC&SU students are fortunate to have the new technology.
“I’m not that great with computers, but I’m looking forward to getting involved with one of the workshops,” said Perdue. “Who knows? Maybe I’ll produce my own movie.”
