The Voice

Thousands of people in the southern parts of the country are dead because of Hurricane Katrina. A majority of the city of New Orleans is underwater. The power has been cut off, and will be, for months. Homes are ruined, families are being torn apart, yet, in the midst of what could be America’s deadliest natural disaster for a century, we’re freaking out about high gas prices.

Kinda crazy when you put it in that perspective, huh?

The streets in New Orleans have been flooded for days. Carcasses are everywhere. People are becoming dehydrated and are being forced to drink the dangerous water contaminated by sewage. A national health emergency has been declared.

And here we are in Milledgeville contemplating how horrible life is going to be because we might not be able to drive as often as we’re used to.

Shouldn’t we be counting our blessings instead of worrying about gas perils that will more than likely improve in a few days? Shouldn’t we be thinking of ways we can help the surviving homeless hurricane victims? We think so.

Thankfully, there are a few encouraging elements in the aftermath of the horrific storm.

Sandy Baxter of the Oconee Valley Red Cross in Milledgeville is helping to set up shelters around the area, which should be opened soon. The American Red Cross has served over 64,000 meals to victims, and there are volunteers helping from 48 states in 208 shelters.

An idea blossomed at the Times Talk on campus this afternoon to help the refugees. The “Change for Change Drive,” coordinated by two GC&SU students and Coverdell Program Assistant Tracy Norris, will be a campus-wide effort to collect change for the hurricane victims. Every little bit helps, and students will be collecting change all around campus.

So instead of sitting in your dorm room or apartment pondering what you’re going to do around town since you’re broke from the high gas prices, why not think of ways you can help those that have lost everything they own? Just a thought.
