Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs to develop a network of resources, support

The Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs (DMA), along with a new location (Maxwell Student Union) and vision, has great things in store for the 2005-2006 academic year. The primary mission of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs is to provide programs and services that foster intercultural dialogue, celebrate differences, create a nurturing and educational environment, and enhance the quality of life for all.

The Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs takes a leadership role in developing a network of support and resources for students, faculty and staff of diversity populations. This primarily includes African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Americans. DMA conducts seminars, workshops, lectures and other special events on a regular basis which assist students in making informed decisions about new emerging opportunities at GC&SU. Programs and services DMA offer include the Women’s Resource Center , Diversity Resource Room, Student Oriented Activities for Retention and Historical Commemoration.

The Women’s Resource Center is located Maxwell Student Union 143 and is a gathering space of comfort and resources where students, faculty and staff come together. WRC provides education, resources, referrals, mentoring, community building and networking opportunities for the women at GC&SU and in Baldwin County.

The Diversity Resource Room, which is located in Maxwell Student Union 133, includes materials and resources of interest to a wide range of students. Whether you need to surf the Internet or type a paper, watch a video or read a book, the resource room is bound to have something for you.

Student Oriented Activities for Retention is a mentoring program for African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American students at GC&SU. The program is designed to ease the transition of students coming into the University community while simultaneously providing a means for personal student/faculty relationships outside of the classroom.

The Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs attempts to move outside of tradition by proclaiming commemorative days, weeks and months, that tout their own special cause. Spending time together as a community to celebrate the history, traditions and customs of others is what is important to the staff. DMA brings the campus and community together through various activities and events.

At GC&SU, we recognize the following commemorative events: Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15, National American Indian Heritage Month, November, Disability Awareness Month, October, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 16, African-American History Month, February, Women’s History Month, March, Days of Remembrance Jewish Heritage Week, April and May, and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, April.
