GC&SU unveils fall intramural sports lineup

Georgia College & State University Intramural & Recreational Sports program has added several tournaments and events for fall 2005.

Returning this fall are the popular flag football and ultimate Frisbee leagues along with the No Boundaries events.

“Flag football is always the most popular,” Andy Hudgins, coordinator of Intramural & Recreation Sports said. “Last year we had about 55 teams.”

Due to the popularity of flag football, students will have more opportunities to get in time on the gridiron.

“In addition to the flag football we always have, we are doing a special tournament before the season starts,” Hudgins said.

The winners of the flag football tournament will receive bids to the state tournament in Athens in November.

There will also be a basketball tournament this fall in addition to the tournament held during the spring semester.

Winners of the basketball tournament will receive bids to the state tournament in February.

To compete in the flag football and basketball tournaments, teams will be required to pay a $50 entry fee.

“(Teams) are going to have to pay to play because we have to pay the referees and staff for other official events like the tournaments,” Hudgins said.

Participation in intramural sports has increased over the years, but Hudgins expects more students to play this semester.

“I expect participation to increase with the fields being here on campus,” Hudgins said.

This fall the intramural sports will be moved on campus from Walter B. Williams Park where they were played last semester.

For all of the card sharks on campus, Texas No Limit Hold ‘em returns with a tournament the first week of class and another tournament later in the semester.

“We had a poker tournament last year and it was pretty popular, so we are going to have two poker tournaments this coming semester,” Hudgins said.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and participate.

“It’s a good way to release some energy, to get away from classes, have some fun and meet new people,” Hudgins said.
