The Voice

Where do we begin? Twenty-four Wednesdays. Twenty-four late nights. An unenviable position by most standards, but an opportunity none of us will ever forget.

The year began in a place familiar to all GC&SU community members-a place where words like pots of money and freezes had nothing to do with leprechauns or ice. Dorms were flooding, U.S. News and World Report said GC&SU was awesome, crazy storms knocked a few trees down and members of the faculty and staff came together to create SafeSpace, a program to help support the diversity of our students.

Then came the name change. The name change was our Mexotica. It was our naked dancing in public. This time, though, it jumpstarted a process of communication to all bodies of GC&SU. Their voices were heard, the verdict dropped and the president said forget the majority-let’s do what’s best for the audience that will most affect the future of our school-potential students.

The graduation situation isn’t over yet, but we conquered that, too. We’re still interested to see how many people pass out on the lawn in the Georgia heat (not too long ago, it was over 80 degrees in the midday sun.)

A tsunami wiped away cities a world away and a relief effort, which started with one man, ended in a community event that created cooperation across campus.

All-in-all, we can’t complain. News was up and we were in the office writing about it… a lot. We tried some things that didn’t work and some things that did. The Colonnade was never the same after the police report hit the page, but the “Litter Box” just fell by the wayside. That’s okay. If other students don’t want to participate, we don’t care about it anyway.

Christina Homer, our variety editor, will be taking command of the ship and, surely, will steer it toward another successful year. Those of you who are graduating: congratulations. Those of you who will be here next year, it’s not goodbye, but so long. We did what we could and it is time for our bow.

Good night and good news.

Love,
The Colonnade
