Swim Cats glide to third at final meet
The first-year swim team at Georgia College & State University finished third overall at the 2005 Southeastern Collegiate Swimming Championship.
The Swim Cats finished on the heels of the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech overall, including a second place finished in the women’s division just behind UGA.
Alex Smith was the only man to race for the Swim Cats. He placed second in the 200 free and in the 100 individual medley.
For the women, Lauren Cutrone placed third in the 100 breaststroke, while Blair Janzen placed first in the 500 free.
The third place overall finish marks the final meet of the inaugural season for the Swim Cats. Maureen Hassey, vice-president of the Swim Cats, credits the hard work of the members for the successful first year.
“We had so much interest and such hard-working individuals. Our swimmers were energetic and excelled at the meets,” Hassey said.
President of the Swim Cats Tammi Sheppard, who placed second in the 100 back and third in the 100 free, echoed Hassey’s positive comments about the team.
“We did really well compared to other teams percentage wise,” Sheppard said. “We out-performed other teams; they beat us purely because they had more swimmers. Based on individual performance, we won.”
According to Hassey, the team will practice individually over the summer and announce official times in the fall semester.
Hassey said the Swim Cats are always looking for more swimmers. Interested swimmers should come out for the team in the fall.
“Everyone on this team has a lot of experience with swimming and are welcome to help anyone who wants to be part of the Swim Cats,” Hassey said.
