Bobcats annihilate Night Hawks

Mike DeVeaux hit for the cycle to help 21st-ranked Georgia College & State University knock off Thomas University 23-4 and give Coach Chris Calciano his 150th career victory Wednesday at John Kurtz Field. GC&SU (30-19) pounded out a season high 25 hits while recording a season-best 23 runs.

Thomas (20-22) scored two runs in the top of the first on a Danny Powers RBI ground out and an RBI single from Matthew Blanton. GC&SU scored five runs in its first at bat as DeVeaux hit an RBI triple to score Hans Stancil and later scored on John Caruso’s RBI double. Nick Trainor followed with an RBI double, and Giuseppe Rivas clubbed a two run home run for a 5-2 Bobcat lead.

DeVeaux, Trainor, and Rivas had RBI singles in the second inning, and Sorrells capped the six-run frame with a three-run home run to give the Bobcats an 11-2 advantage.

DeVeaux belted a two-run home run in the third, and Greg Serafin added a two-run triple for a 15-2 lead, and DeVeaux completed the cycle in the fourth inning with an RBI double.

Calciano, now in his first season at GC&SU, picked up his first 120 victories in four years at West Chester University.

DeVeaux finished 4-for-4 with five RBI, while Rivas went 5-for-6 with five RBI as well. Trainor added a 3-for-4, two RBI day, while Justin Mills, Stancil, Caruso and Donald Johnson had two hits apiece. Ronnie Franklin went 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Night Hawks.

Travis Spell (3-5) picked up the win for the Bobcats after tossing four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Thomas Buckner (4-5) took the loss for the Night Hawks after giving up 15 runs on 14 hits in three innings.

GC&SU closes out its Peach Belt Conference schedule with three games at Columbus State University over the weekend beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
