Yard sale and carnival benefit to

A yard sale and a carnival will take place next Friday, April 29 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. to provide end-of-the-semester stress relief for students.

The money raised from the afternoon events will benefit the Department of Family & Children’s Services.

Coordinated by Parkhurst Hall Complex Director Jen Russell and sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, the yard sale and carnival will take place in the courtyard between Parkhurst and Foundation Residence Halls. In case of rain the event will move to the Centennial Center.

“The money RHA is using to sponsor the event is a portion of its Student Activities Budget Committee money. Every student on campus pays a student activity fee. That money is issued by a committee made up of the Student Government Association executive board to student organizations,” Amanda Gunter, Napier Hall Director and advisor for RHA, said. “The money that RHA was given this year has been used to sponsor programming events, usually on the weekends. RHA decided to sponsor the carnival in order to provide something fun for students to do at the end of the semester and to help alleviate some of the final exams stress.”

Russell said she came up with the idea of the yard sale & carnival with the help of one of her old resident assistants, Amanda Hogan.

“The reason why I wanted to coordinate the event is because [Hogan] mentioned doing a yard sale. I took her idea and wanted to have the yard sale, but also wanted to add something else to it to get people to come,” Russell said. “So we came up with the carnival idea. We’re doing it through Magic Hat Productions.”

Russell said all the carnival activities will be free. There will be a 60-foot obstacle course, a rock wall, a “shoot the hoops” game, adult-sized tricycles, a dunking booth, a caricature artist, a temporary tattoo artist and a variety of food.

“Pig in a Pit is coming to the event around 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be serving dinner at reduced rates,” Russell said. “Brusters Ice Cream will also be serving all day.”

Raffles will take place throughout the day for Pig in the Pit, Brusters Ice Cream and the local radio station Z-97.

“Z-97 will be bringing their truck and broadcasting live from GC&SU at the yard sale & carnival from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.,” Russell said. “The raffle they are doing is for returning students to either Bobcat Village or the Residence Halls to have a students room redecorated prior to their arrival in August.”

Russell said tables at the yard sale can be reserved until Wednesday, April 27. The tables are 30 inches wide by eight feet long.

“If you are interested in selling items or promoting a hobby or second job, you can rent a table for $10,” Russell said. “The items that you intend to sell or promote must fit on the surface of the table and large items may only be placed on the ground in front of the table.”

Seven local bands, Thief on the Right, Mile 7, Eric Jordan and Company, Russ Mclaughlin, Extended Play, The Hollow and Last Year Portrait, will be performing at the yard sale and carnival from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Russell hopes the yard sale and carnival event will become an annual GC&SU tradition.

“Our hope is to open it up to the [public] next year because I think that would bring even more people in and connect us with the community,” Russell said. “I wanted to connect us to the community through a charity that we could give to every year.”

To reserve a table or to make donations, contact Russell at parkhurst.hall@gcsu.edu or 478-804-4672. Send checks payable to GC&SU to Russell at CBX 60.
