Letters to the editor: Wal-Mart gets bad press for poor treatment of employees
Editor:
I would like to respond to the editorial in last week’s edition concerning whatever became of the friendly Wal-Mart greeters. While I realize this was written somewhat tongue in cheek, I have a reading recommendation for the young lady who wrote it. You should pick up a copy of Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Nickled and Dimed…On (Not) Getting By in America.” The book poses some interesting possibilities for why people in those types of jobs don’t have much to smile about. Wal-Mart is actually singled out in the book for its poor treatment of employees. Wal-Mart’s attempt to convince its shoppers that it’s just one big happy family and it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood seems to have some cracks in it. There is dignity in all work…for the worker. Wal-Mart’s employment practices seem to betray that dignity.
