Kitchens named Most Outstanding Student

Senior and History major Josh Kitchens has been named Most Outstanding Student for Spring Semester.

The Jones County High School graduate said he was excited to receive the award.

“I was in my Creative Writing class and I got a phone call,” Kitchens said. “When I got out of class, I saw that it was a call from Dean [Beth] Rushing, and she told me the good news. I was so excited I was speechless.”

Kitchens, who is an honor student, boasts a 3.8 GPA, and is also very involved in other facets of student life. He is currently the president of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history Honor Society, Treasurer of the History Club, and a member of the American Humanics Society. He also works in the Ina D. Russell Library part-time, where he works in the Special Collection department.

“In a typical day, I’m on campus at eight in the morning, then I have classes all day, and then usually one or two meetings, and I don’t usually make it home to Bobcat Village until about eight at night.” Kitchens said.

After his graduation in May, Josh said he plans on taking a position at the Germanna Foundation in Virginia, where he will be the manager an office and the manager of archives.

Kitchens said he also plans on attending graduate school while living in Virginia, although he has not made a final decision on which school he will attend.

A committee chose Josh as GC&SU’s Outstanding Student after he was nominated by professor and Chair of the History Department Dr. Lee Ann Caldwell and Campus Director of American Humanics Sara Faircloth. Both wrote letters of recommendation to the committee in charge of selecting the recipient of the award, and the committee then awarded the honor to Kitchens.

Josh will be presented the award at Honors Day, which be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22 in Russell Auditorium.

Josh said he already knows a few ideal job positions that he would be interested in for the future.

“I definitely want to be director of a natural history museum. Either that or a director of a library.”

Classes will not be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 22 so that faculty and students may attend Honors Day. For more information, visit the GC&SU InfoPage at info.gcsu.edu.
