Honors Day changes focus
Special to The Colonnade
Honors Day is traditionally a day to celebrate and recognize the achievement of students and faculty, but some changes to the 2005 event will give the celebration even more meaning, announced Dr. Anne Gormly, vice president and dean of faculties.
The Honors Day Convocation will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22, in Russell Auditorium. Dr. E.H. Barman, professor of biology, and GC&SU’s Distinguished Professor for the year 2005, will be the keynote speaker. Barman will receive his award from GC&SU President Dorothy Leland prior to his speech.
In the past, the keynote speaker has been the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. This change in speakers reflects the focus on making the Honors Day Convocation a celebration of the achievements of faculty and students, said Gormly.
“During this year’s Honors Day we will formally celebrate the accomplishments of selected students and faculty,” Gormly said.
Students who will be recognized include new members of Phi Kappa Phi, the Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Outstanding Majors. A new feature this year will be the addition of an award to the Outstanding Student from the Schools of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Health Sciences. Each will be recognized by their respective deans. As is the past, the student recipient of the University System of Georgia Academic Recognition Award will also be honored.
Classes will not be held from 1 to 3 p.m. so that all faculty and students may attend the Convocation, Gormly said.
