GC&SU teams with children’s museum
Georgia College & State University announced a partnership with the Georgia Children’s Museum on April 1 that will provide numerous opportunities for students.
“The Children’s Museum and the programs that GC&SU will offer here are an exciting partnership,” President Dorothy Leland said in a press release. “Our hope is that the experiences provided in the Children’s Museum will ignite that spark in young learners that starts them on a course of discovery, that unveils the joys of the life of the mind, and that builds habits that will indeed last a lifetime.”
GC&SU’s role in the partnership was initiated by former dean of the Lounsbury School of Education Dr. Janet Fields, Assistant Professor of Education Martha Jones said.
“The Georgia Children’s Museum has established relationships with several educational institutions in the area,” Jones said. “GC&SU was chosen for this special partnership because of its liberal arts mission, the focus of the John H. Lounsbury School of Education on the interactive nature of learning and the widespread enthusiasm of GC&SU’s faculty and administration for involvement in the education of Middle Georgia’s children. It was a perfect blending of people and ideas.”
The partnership will create opportunities such as internships, research and volunteering for students in education, art, music, public administration, health, theatre and the liberal arts and sciences. Students will be able to collaborate on exhibit development, special programs, creating activities and learning experiences for children and their parents that are based on Georgia’s Performance Standards, Dean of Education Dr. Linda Irwin-DeVitis said.
“Our partnership will be on several levels,” Irwin-DeVitis said in a recent press release. “Primarily it will help to provide the educational focus for the museum.”
The partnership with GC&SU is beneficial to both the university and the children’s museum, said Dr. Martha Jones, GC&SU assistant professor and president of the projects’ board.
“Everyone concerned with the partnership recognizes that it will benefit both institutions and the larger community,” Jones said. “As one who is deeply committed to both institutions, I am thrilled by what the partnership will offer the entire community and the improvement it should make in the fabric of education for our children.”
