Special to the Colonnade
Georgia College & State University used a five-run eighth inning to rally for an 8-5 victory over Augusta State University on Monday to complete a three game Peach Belt Conference baseball series sweep at John Kurtz Field.
The game started out as a good battle between GC&SU (22-15, 11-10 PBC) starter Mike Bergstrom and Augusta State starter Max Fischer. The Bobcats dented the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning as Stancil tripled to left-center to bring home Greg Serafin for a 1-0 lead. The Jaguars knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth as Dustin Rucker scored from third base on a balk by Bergstrom.
GC&SU reclaimed the lead in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Mike DeVeaux to bring home Justin Mills for a 2-1 advantage. ASU took its first lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning as Brandon Sumlin stroked a two-run single and an error on the throw coming in from left field allowed another run to score on the play to give the Jaguars a 4-2 lead.
DeVeaux belted a solo home run, his 10th of the year, in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit down to 4-3.
GC&SU exploded for five runs in the eighth. ASU made an error on a bunt single by Chris Pinns allowing Wes Sorrells to score from second base to tie the game at 4-4. Ronnie Burkey came through with an RBI single later in the inning to bring Pinns home for a 5-4 GC&SU lead. A few batters later, Stancil stepped in and hit a three-run home run to put the Bobcats up 8-4. The Bobcats held on for the 8-5 victory and their fifth straight win.
Jayson Bennett (4-2) picked up the win in relief after allowing one run on two hits in two complete innings. Fischer (4-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits in 7.1 innings.
Stancil finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, while DeVeaux went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead GC&SU at the plate.
