Baseball scores sixth straight win
Justin Mills delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the tenth inning to score Chris Pinns for what would be the game-winning run in Georgia College & State University’s 8-7 victory at Presbyterian College on April 5. GC&SU, now ranked 26th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA II Poll, wins its sixth straight game for its longest win-streak of the season to improve to 23-15 on the season.
With two outs in the tenth, GC&SU’s Nick Waldrip was hit by a pitch and was replaced by Pinns as a pinch runner. Pinns moved to second on Nick Trainor’s bunt single, setting up Mills’ heroics one batter later.
The Blue Hose jumped on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first before the Bobcats came back and scored one in the second on a home run by John Caruso, and a couple more in the third as Caruso came through again with a two-run single for a 3-1 lead.
After GC&SU plated another run in the fifth inning on Mike DeVeaux’s RBI single, PC exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead highlighted by a two-run single from Russell Robinson and a two-run double from Lance Howard.
The see-saw affair continued as DeVeaux singled in another run in the seventh, and the Bobcats took a 7-6 lead with two runs in the eighth via RBI singles from Waldrip and Mills. PC forced the extra frame on Kemper Booth’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to knot things at 7-7.
Michael Newman (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Bobcats in relief after allowing two runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Ross Ellis took the loss for the Blue Hose after allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of relief.
GC&SU’s doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday at John Kurtz Field with West Georgia has been cancelled again due to transportation problems for the Braves. The Bobcats will open a three game Peach Belt Conference series Saturday at Kennesaw State with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
Mike DeVeaux leads the team with a .443 average, with Chris Burrill in second with a .385 average, and John Caruso in third place with a .368 average.
Only one home series remains in the regular season for the Bobcats. The series is April 22-23 against Peach Belt Conference opponent Armstrong Atlantic State. Armstrong is currently in ninth place in the PBC with a 4-7 PBC record and a 21-8 overall record.
